Magnetic properties of confined bosonic vacuum

چکیده
The effect of confinement on the bosonic vacuum under the action of an applied magnetic field is computed using Schwinger's formalism for the effective action. The final result reproduces an effective La-grangian similar to the Heisenberg-Euler one in the limit of no confinement and in the case of confinement provides the necessary corrections to this Lagrangian at each order of magnitude of the magnetic field. It also shows a new contribution changing the vacum permeability constant.

Analytical regularisation for confined quantum fields between parallel surfaces
We review a simple technique for evaluating the vacuum energy stemming from non-trivial boundary conditions and present results for the Casimir energy of a massive fermionic field confined in a d + 1-dimensional slab-bag and the effect of a uniform magnetic field on the vacuum energy of confined massive bosonic and fermionic fields. New results concerning the Casimir energy and the evaluation o...
متن کاملMagnetic permeability of constrained scalar QED vacuum
We compute the influence of boundary conditions on the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian scalar QED scalar for the case of a pure magnetic field. The boundary conditions constrain the quantum scalar field to vanish on two parallel planes separeted by a distance a and the magnetic field is assumed to be constant, uniform and perpendicular to the planes. The effective Lagrangian is obtained u...

We compute the combined effect of confinement, an external magnetic field and temperature on the vacuum of the charged scalar field using Schwinger’s formula for the effective action in the imaginary time formalism. The final result reproduces an effective Lagrangian similar to the Heisenberg-Euler one in the limit of no confinement, in the case of confinement it provides the necessary correcti...
متن کاملThe bosonic Casimir effect in an external magnetic field
We compute the influence of an applied magnetic field on the Casimir energy of a massive scalar field confined between two parallel infinite plates using Schwinger's method from source theory. The boundary conditions are those of a vanishing field through the plates. The obtained results show that a strong magnetic field inhibits the bosonic Casimir effect and that a weak magnetic field increas...
متن کاملQuantum Antiferromagnets in Two Dimensions
I review recent work, performed in collaboration primarily with N. Read and Jinwu Ye, on the properties of quantum antiferromagnets in two dimensions. The emphasis is on the properties of the antiferromagnet in states which do not have any long-range magnetic order. The universal spin dynamics in the quantum critical region of number of frustrated and random antiferromagnets is studied; implica...
